PYC’s Yachting Festival - Back up to speed

Story by Scott Murray

The Phuket Yacht Club has embedded Nautical Mystic, its roving correspondent, on board one of the yachts racing in the Yachting Festival and he filed the following report based on today’s action.

After two difficult days of light and unstable conditions, with frustration mounting on all sides, day three of the delivered a welcome return to racing. Following a short postponement ashore while the wind settled in, the fleet headed out into a west-northwesterly breeze of 6–10 knots and completed three races, making it the most productive day of the regatta so far.

The moderate WNW breeze provided much fairer racing than the opening days, although shifts and pressure changes across the course still rewarded crews that stayed alert tactically.

Monohull A

Windsikher and Alright emerged as the standout performers of the day, each finishing on 6 points overall. Windsikher claimed the top spot on countback after posting race results of 2-1-2-1, while Alright matched the total with 1-2-1-2. Aftershock remains in third place on 12 points, keeping the pressure on the leading pair.

Monohull B

Phoenix was the most consistent boat in the class, scoring 2-1-1 to finish the day on 4 points and take the overall lead. Nijinsky sits second on 7 points, while Jing Jing moved into third with 9 points after recovering well from a DNF in the opening race of the day.

Racing Multihull

The multihull fleet saw Twin Sharks dominate the day with an impressive 1-1-1 scoreline, giving them a clear lead on 6 points overall. No Fear holds second on 8 points, while Blue Noze is third on 10 points.

Looking Ahead

With three races completed, the leaderboard has begun to take shape, but the margins remain tight in several classes. The improved breeze transformed the regatta, and crews returned to the Phuket Yacht Club after an excellent afternoon of close racing. If similar conditions continue, the battle for overall honours promises to become even more competitive over the remaining days.

After a week that began with postponements and frustratingly light airs, Day 3 finally delivered what everyone had been waiting for—three quality races and the start of a proper championship battle.
