Vayu refuses to come out & play on day two of PYC’s Yachting Festival
Story by Scott Murray
Day two of the Phuket Yacht Club Yachting Festival proved to be a waiting game, with a complete lack of wind preventing any racing from taking place.
Race Officer Simon James has many nicknames, including, “the Wind Guru”, & “the Wind Whisperer”, as he is known for sensing a gust before even a wind chime can, but even his supernatural ability couldn’t corral Vayu, the God of Wind to get him to come out and play today.
The race committee remained patient, monitoring the conditions throughout the day in the hope that a sea breeze would develop. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the wind never arrived in sufficient strength to allow fair racing, and competitors were eventually sent back ashore with no races completed.
While the sailors were disappointed not to add to the scoreboard, spirits remained high as the fleet returned to the Phuket Yacht Club Waterfront Restauarant & Bar. Crews made the most of the unexpected downtime, sharing stories from the opening day's racing and enjoying complimentary beers generously sponsored by Asia Catamarans.
With the regatta still finely balanced after just one completed race, everyone will be hoping for a more cooperative forecast over the coming days. The camaraderie ashore was a reminder that, while racing is at the heart of the festival, the social atmosphere and friendships are just as much a part of what makes the Phuket Yacht Club Yachting Festival such a popular event.
